Five Stages to Brainstorm

For the 5 stages of your life…answer the applicable brainstorming questions. After each brainstorming section is completed, write down any business ideas you can possibly conjure up. Be creative. Anything goes at this point.

5 – 12 (childhood years)

Recalling childhood memories is a great brainstorming starting point. Delving into joyful experiences you once enjoyed as a child could generate business ideas you might otherwise miss.

What were your favourite activities during this early stage in your life? Why do you think it made you so happy? What were some of your best Birthday, Christmas, or Easter presents? Why were they so special to you? Where were your most favourite places to go? to visit? What did you do there? Why was it fun to do that? What things did you learn how to do? What was your favourite subject in grade school?

Was there anyone in your life who recognised any talent you possessed? What was it? Did you have any pet responsibilities? Do you think you had an entrepreneur spirit as a young person? Did you ever have a paper route? lemonade stand? shovel snow or babysit? What do you remember wanting to be or do when you grew up?

List home business ideas that may have surfaced. Example: Create an information website about zoo animals, start a pet watching or doll repair service.

13 – 20 (teen years)

Memories from your teen years can evoke all kinds of business ideas. Keep an open mind and be imaginative while you brainstorm business ideas to start a home based business.

Who was the most important person during this stage of your life? Why were they so special to you? What characteristics or values did they possess? Who was the most encouraging teacher? What was your best subject in school? What was your favorite thing to do after school? What sports did you play? What skills did you learn during your teen years? What do you think your major passion was during this stage?

Have you ever built or created anything from scratch? What was it? Why did you create it? Did you ever have to do a science project? What was it? What skills did you learn doing that? What responsibilities did you have? What was your favourite task or chore? What jobs did you have? What skills did you learn at each job? What was the most enjoyable job? Did you ever take an aptitude test? What were your strong points? Did anyone encourage you to pursue a particular course? What did you always want to do or be when you became a teenager?

List some fun home business ideas. Example: Creating videos for special events, party planning service, or sewing clothes for pets, or pet photography.

20 – 30 (young adult years)

Business ideas brainstormed from this stage can be quite fruitful. Think of all the skills you’ve acquired already through on the job training, education, and parenting.

What jobs or careers did you pursue? What skills did you learn on each job?Have you ever solved a perplexing problem for yourself or someone else? What was it?How did you find the right solution?Have you ever received any awards? What were they?Have you ever had a major health or family issue? What was it?How did you cope with the situation? What character traits did you possess to pull you through? Do you play any musical instruments? What kind of music do you listen to? Why do you listen to that kind of music? What do you hope to accomplish in the next 5 years?

List the best home business ideas for this section. Example: Start a math tutoring service, bicycle repair business, or teach guitar.

40 – 60 (adult years)

Brainstorming questions for business ideas at this stage should be a lot easier. You’ve experienced so much over the years and have so much to offer when you start a home based business.

If you had all the money you needed and didn’t have to work, what would you do today? Do you like helping people? What do you like to do for friends, family, neighbours? If you could solve one world problem right now, what would that be? If you had the chance to learn something new, what things would you like to learn? If you could go back to school, what classes would you like to take? Where would you like to travel?

Why would you like to go there? Did you ever start a business venture? If so, what type of businesses did you have? Why did you start the business? What was the most challenging part of operating the business? Did you ever work remotely at all? Do you belong to church or other organisation? What responsibilities do you have there? What responsibilities would you like to have? What are your hobbies? When you go to a bookstore or library, what books do you normally choose?

When you’re searching the internet, what topics do you usually look for? If someone offered to build you a website, what would you like it to be about? If you had the skill and time to write a book, what would you like to write about? If you were to describe yourself through another person’s eyes, what would you say? What are your goals for the next 10 years?

60+ (Senior years)

Senior years are one of the most opportune times to start a home based business. You have years of experience and exposure to a variety of interests and opportunities. Looking back on your life, what would you say was the most rewarding thing you did? What was the most satisfying project you worked on? What was the most unselfish act you performed?
